Incontinence

Incontinence itself is not a disease, but a side effect. Incontinence denotes a symptom that describes the non-self-determined emptying of the bladder (urinary incontinence) and of the bowel (anal incontinence). The unreported number of people suffering from incontinence is high, because often people do not talk about their illness. They rather want to avoid the embarrassment buying suitable tools in medical supply stores and pharmacies, by using self-made diapers. The fear of being noticed by smelly or moisture clothes often causes retreat from social ties. As a result, it can lead to loneliness, depression and increasing social isolation.

Classification of incontinence

There are numerous classifications of incontinence. The following are the most common ones:

  • Stress incontinence: Typical, involuntary discharge of urine during exercise, for example, when coughing, sneezing, laughing, climbing stairs, or when lifting heavy loads, as the occlusion mechanism of the bladder fails.
  • Urge incontinence: Due to a hyperactive bladder muscle, you suddenly feel that you have to empty your bladder or your bowel, but you can’t hold it anymore.
  • Overflow incontinence: If you suffer from chronic bladder overstreching with increase of the pressure within the bladder, the urine starts to drip. This sometimes occurs to older men with an enlarged prostate, but also to diabetics with an overflow bladder.

Where does incontinence come from?

Both urinary and anal incontinence are usually symptoms of another disease. Physical and psychological causes can be the trigger. Therefore, with incontinence the causes must be recognized and treated.

  • Hormonal disorders
  • Metabolic diseases
  • Mental (psychosomatic) disorders
  • Infections
  • Bladder infecion
  • etc.

Causes of anal incontinence are just as varied as urinary incontinence. The sphincter, pelvic floor, nervous system and rectum play a crucial role in excretion. If individual factors of this interaction are disturbed, this can lead to anal incontinence. But also physical changes such as hemorrhoids, a sphincter injury after childbirth or episiotomy, but also tumors can be the cause of anal incontinence.
