Osteoporosis - what is it?

Bones are exposed to the most varied exigencies in everyday life. In order to fulfil these, there must be a perfectly coordinated interaction between bone-building and bone-degrading cells. If one is affected with the disease, the interaction between those cells is severely disturbed. When bone resorption predominates, the strength decreases and the bone becomes more and more porose. Hence the risk of fractures increases.

Over many years, the clinical pattern of osteoporosis proceeds without symptomatic signs. As a result, the disease is often recognized too late. Osteoporosis is one of the world's most common disease. More than 40% of women over the age of 50 are affected by osteoporosis and subsequently of bone fractures. It is therefore very important to prevent serious disease progression.

Classification of osteoporosis:

  • The primary osteoporosis is caused by aging. With around 95% of those affected, it is the most common type of osteoporosis. Women are usually affected after the onset of the hormonal changes in menopause. Men much later.

  • Secondary osteoporosis is caused by the patient's lifestyle, medical treatments or other illnesses.

Preventing serious consequences:

We want to keep our mobility as long as possible. The hip is the linchpin of our body. The hip joint connects pelvis and legs and allows us to move. With increasing age, insecure gait can rapidly lead to falls. About 40% of people over the age of 65 fall at least once a year. But also younger patients with neurological or orthopedic diseases are affected. A femoral neck fracture can lead to months of immobility and can have serious consequences. Different arrangements can prevent a serious disease progression.

  • Regular exercise can help building bones and slow down bone atrophy. About 30 minutes a day are enough.

  • Sufficient amounts of vitamin D (sunlight) help the body to absorb important calcium.

  • Smoking reduces calcium absorption in the body, leading to increased loss of bone density.

  • Daily alcohol consumption can lead to decreased osteogenesis.

  • It is recommended to reduce caffeinated drinks such as coke and coffee. More than 3 cups of coffee a day can increase the risk of osteoporosis.

  • Avoid as long as possible the use of corticosteroids.

  • It is recommended to treat eating disorders therapeutically.

  • In order to avoid falls, you should wear low and non-slippery shoes. In addition, you should avoid possible risks of accidents and provide adequate lighting.
